The Canadian singer made a surprise visit last week to talk to the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir, which includes nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, support staff and other professionals.

The choir achieved last year’s Christmas number one with the song A Bridge Over You, beating Bieber and other acts in the process.

During the race for the Christmas number one spot, the singer tweeted his support for the choir.

But he went one step further by dropping in to see them at a London hotel and congratulating them on their chart performance.

Choir member Elem Nnachi, a neonatal nurse in Lewisham Hospital, told Nursing Standard: ‘He said: “Don’t be a one-hit wonder.” It was a pat on the back.

‘He was high-fiving everybody and I said to him: “Don’t keep my hand hanging.”

‘You think these superstars will be on their high horse, not talking to everyone, but he was down to earth and talked to everyone.’

Caroline Smith, a highly specialist physiotherapist at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, said that through his support of the choir and the NHS, the star had gained even more ‘Beliebers’ – the name for his millions of fans worldwide.

Proceeds from the choir’s hit song went to charities including Mind. The choir is planning further performances.
