Appeal to nurses to support Nepal earthquake fund

The Nepalese Nursing Association UK (NNA UK) is appealing to nurses worldwide to make a donation to help the thousands of people left devastated by Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal.

At least 3,600 people have been killed, thousands have been injured and there has been widespread destruction of buildings following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and nearly 60 aftershocks that hit the country.

Unicef has said nearly one million children are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and there are reports of power outages and dwindling water and food supplies.

The NNA UK has set up a donation page and has called on nurses ‘to join hands at this moment of huge tragedy’.

It has already received more than £7,000 in donations towards a fundraising target of £50,000.

The fundraising page says: ‘This is heart breaking.

‘Let’s unite, let’s help whichever way we can.’

The country’s western and central regions have mainly been affected, including its two largest cities Kathmandu and Pokhara.

The United Nations said hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley are overcrowded, running out of room for storing dead bodies and running short of emergency supplies.

It is feared the death toll could climb higher and there are concerns for people living in remote villages that remain out of reach for search and rescue teams.
