Exhausted as the end of your night shift approaches, your eyes stinging with tiredness and limbs aching, the quick energy boost offered by a fizzy drink or bar of chocolate is tempting. The tendency to reach for something sugary when we feel off-colour and tired might be explained partly by habit – a desire for the food and treats that have made us feel better since childhood.
