Nursing staff will be able to develop their careers and access education funding through a new institute.

The RCN education institute will work with universities to support nursing research, offer its own professorships and fund PhD programmes for nurses.

And from this summer, an online resource will bring together more than 350 pieces of learning and guidance.

‘We will work to make this a centre of excellence’

Announcing the news at the RCN annual congress in Glasgow, general secretary Pat Cullen said: ‘This education revolution in the RCN will help tomorrow’s nurses find their way.  We will collaborate, engage and work with the profession to make this institute a centre of excellence for years to come.’

This represents the re-establishment of an institute that was set up in 1987 and lasted a decade, and it builds on existing education and learning programmes offered by the college to nursing staff across the UK.
