Huge escalation in nurses strikes with 120 employers hit next month
Nurses in England to walk out for 48 hours from 1 March as RCN ramps up action to leave no part of NHS unaffected
Nurses’ in England will walk out again next month as strike action escalates to include emergency, cancer and intensive care nurses.
The RCN is planning a 48-hour walkout from 6am on Wednesday 1 March to 6am Friday 3 March across 120 NHS employers in England – a significant step up from the 73 trusts that faced strike action in February.
For the first time, the RCN will involve nursing staff working in emergency departments, intensive care units, cancer care and other services that were previously exempted. The college said it is ramping up strike action due to the government’s continued inaction on pay negotiations.
Pat Cullen says Sunak is pushing more people into strikes by refusing to negotiate with nurses
Financial support paid to members on strike will be increased from £50 to £80 per day, with the rate increasing to £120 from their fourth day of action to better support nurses who continue to refuse to work.
RCN general secretary Pat Cullen urged prime minister Rishi Sunak to meet with her so she could stop the strikes. ‘It is with a heavy heart that I have today asked even more nursing staff to join this dispute. These strikes will not just run for longer and involve more people but will leave no area of the NHS unaffected,’ she said.
‘Patients and nurses alike did not want this to happen. By refusing to negotiate with nurses, the prime minister is pushing even more people into the strike. He must listen to NHS leaders and not let this go ahead.’
So far, meetings between health unions and health and social care secretary Steve Barclay have been fruitless, as he has continued to refuse to discuss this year’s pay dispute.
RCN aims to reduce services to ‘absolute minimum’ and ask hospitals to rely on other unions and professions
The RCN said that with no movement from the government, it will seek to reduce services to an ‘absolute minimum’ and ask hospitals to rely on members of other unions and other clinical professions instead.
It added it will no longer be engaging in a process of exemptions of services from strikes at a local level, but instead will continue discussions with the NHS at national level as part of its commitment to ‘life and limb’ care.
Ms Cullen added: ‘I will do whatever I can to ensure patient safety is protected. At first we asked thousands to keep working during the strikes, but it is clear that is only prolonging the dispute.
‘This action must not be in vain – the prime minister owes them an answer.’
Barclay says escalation by RCN will risk patient safety
Mr Barclay said the escalation of strike action will cause further disruption for patients.
‘Failure to provide cover during strike action for key services like cancer care is a significant escalation from the RCN that will risk patient safety,’ he added.
‘I’ve had a series of discussions with unions, including the RCN, about what is fair and affordable for the coming year, as well as wider concerns around conditions and workload.’
