New head says she is proud to lead the team that supports and advocates for nurses
Helen Whyley has been appointed as the permanent director of RCN Wales.
Ms Whyley has held the post on an interim basis since November last year when her long-standing predecessor Tina Donnelly retired.
She has been RCN associate director of employment relations, has a clinical background in intensive care, and has worked in the cardiac intensive care unit at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.
Crucial role
‘I am absolutely delighted to have been appointed as director of RCN Wales,’ said Ms Whyley, who is also chair of All Wales Trade Union Group, Welsh Partnership Forum.
‘The RCN has such a crucial role to play in supporting, protecting and advocating for nurses and healthcare support workers.
‘I am proud to lead the team at RCN Wales, which works with members and stakeholders across the country to face the challenges and celebrate the achievements of nursing professionals.’
Ms Whyley’s career with the RCN in Wales began in 1999 when she was appointed as an RCN professional officer.
Influential figure
Her achievements include a stint in the Welsh Government’s chief nursing office, where her role as nursing officer included professional and policy advice on workforce development, nursing and midwifery education and regulation, and safeguarding.
This work included advising on policy for the Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act, which in 2018 saw Wales become the first country in the UK to have safe staffing enshrined in law.
