Multidisciplinary communication is vital for providing safe and efficient patient care. The situation, background, assessment, recommendation and decision (SBARD) tool is an evidence-based resource that is used widely in physical healthcare settings. It offers healthcare professionals a framework for communicating important and relevant information. This article reports on a quality improvement project that successfully implemented SBARD on two adult mental health units, and describes how it has improved communication between multidisciplinary team members.
