For this year’s International Nurses’ Day, nurses are being encouraged to take time to care for their own mental and physical health following an unprecedented two years that have left many burnt out and looking to leave the profession.

In the run-up to the day, which takes place on 12 May, there are many opportunities to celebrate and pay tribute to nurses all around the world. This year’s themes centre around investing in nursing and respecting nurses’ rights.

‘Safeguard your own physical, mental and emotional health’

Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) chief executive Crystal Oldman said self-care was the key message from her organisation this year.

She added that the day is about thanking nurses for their skills and compassion in supporting health and well-being, but also ensuring nurses are taking care of themselves.

‘Over the past two years nurses have faced challenges beyond any in living memory,’ Dr Oldman said.

‘This year it is important that nurses reflect and take time to safeguard their own physical, mental and emotional health.’

Nurses can celebrate nursing online

The RCN will be sharing stories that demonstrate the best of nursing and is encouraging nurses to share their own stories on social media.

The college’s celebrations will include videos and messages from people across the UK who want to thank nurses for their hard work and care.

How you can celebrate incredible stories of nurses on Twitter

  • The QNI will be sharing stories using the hashtag #NursesDay
  • The RCN will be sharing stories and messages of thanks using #BestOfNursing
  • You can use either of these hashtags and #InternationalNursesDay to share your story, or the story of a nurse you know
