An online platform has been created for healthcare professionals, including nurses, to help improve care for people with learning disabilities.

The platform, called the Learning into Action Network (LiAN), was produced by the team leading the Learning Disabilities Mortality Review (LeDeR).

It has been designed as a learning environment to host forums and information based on the LeDeR programme. The intention is for the reviews to generate learning among healthcare professionals to achieve service improvements across England for people with a learning disability.

Areas of discussion

The network’s four main areas of discussion are the Mental Capacity Act (2005), constipation, deterioration and cancer.

LeDeR southern region coordinator and one of the leads on the LiAN Robert Tunmore said: ‘It was created to share learning from the reviews, which will improve the quality and length of life and reduce health inequalities for people with learning disabilities.

‘It’s to support nurses in areas beyond learning disability who might not know anything about caring for people with learning disabilities.’

Aware of the problems

He said learning disability nurses were well aware of the problems, challenges and heath inequalities that people with learning disabilities and their families face. ‘It’s looking at what can be done to actually engage more widely with the health and social care community.

‘It will help learning disability nurses to promote the importance of their role as specialists.’

The LeDeR Programme started collating reviews in 2016 following the Confidential Inquiry into Premature Deaths of People with Learning Disabilities, which reported that people with learning disabilities have a shorter life span.
