NMC survey asks nurses and the public whether entry requirements to nursing should change now the UK has left the EU

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) wants nurses’ views on whether entry requirements, number of clinical placement hours and other nurse training standards should change now the UK has left the European Union (EU).
UK nursing education standards could change following Brexit
Currently, there is alignment between EU and UK nursing education standards, such as degree programme applicant requirements, course content, hours of study and simulated learning. But the UK could alter these standards now that it is outside the EU.

NMC director of strategy and insight Matthew McClelland said: ‘We want to hear from the public, professionals and our UK partners, to ensure this research provides us with up-to-date evidence about parts of our pre-registration programme standards.’
Survey deadline
The survey asks participants questions such as whether they believe three years’ education and training is the minimum necessary for safe practice at the point a nurse registers for the first time.
Mr McClelland added that any proposed changes resulting from the research would be taken to public and stakeholder consultation before implementation.
The survey is open until 11 May and will form part of a report to be submitted to the NMC in June.
