Fully funded scholarships are now available for nurses to study the effects of neurological conditions.

Nurses working in neurological rehabilitation from all over the world can register for one of 30 fully funded places in a part-time, postgraduate online course, which will teach skills in caring for people recovering from strokes and brain injuries.

Game of Thrones star’s charity helped to develop the course

Emilia Clarke

The places are funded by charity the RCN Foundation and the course was developed in partnership with charity SameYou, which was set up by Game of Thrones actor and activist Emilia Clarke after she survived two life-threatening brain haemorrhages.

The one-year course will be delivered by the University of Edinburgh and has a particular emphasis on assisting the rehabilitation of people aged between 18 and 40 years old.

Course focuses on holistic support of patients

RCN Foundation director Deepa Korea said: ‘Nurses are at the forefront of delivering excellent care, and the investment in this programme demonstrates our ongoing commitment to supporting and strengthening the profession.’

The course focuses on holistic support of the emotional, physical and cognitive needs of people affected by a stroke or brain injury.

It also provides training in how to improve support for patients’ families and carers.

Developing one of ‘the most underfunded areas of healthcare’

SameYou chief executive officer and co-founder Jenny Clarke said: ‘Neurorehabilitation is among the most neglected and underfunded areas of healthcare, and it is one of SameYou’s goals to take action to improve this.

‘We are thrilled to be working in partnership to develop this first-of-its-kind nursing education programme to support the enhancement and training of our nurses to work in neurological rehabilitation.’

Entry criteria and course start date

To be eligible for the course, registered nurses must have a 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent.

Applicants must be working in neurological rehabilitation or have access to a neurological rehabilitation clinical practice environment during the programme.

The course will start in May 2021.
