COVID-19: RCN Foundation to fund research on effective leadership during pandemic

Charity offers up to £30,000 for studies that highlight ‘positive experiences’
Nurses’ and midwives’ experiences of effective leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic are the focus of a new funding call by the RCN Foundation.
The independent charity, which is part of the RCN Group, aims to support the nursing profession across the UK to improve the health and well-being of the public.
Research aims to inform future leadership strategies
RCN Foundation director Deepa Korea said: ‘The RCN Foundation is firmly committed to strengthening the nursing and midwifery professions through our programme of grant-making. This has never been more important than during the current pandemic, which has challenged members of the professions, personally and professionally.’
The research aims to:
- Identify any trends in terms of convergence, divergence and silence around nurses and midwives’ reported experiences of effective leadership strategies across the UK’s four nations.
- Make recommendations for how these practices can be incorporated into future leadership strategies within nursing and midwifery beyond the pandemic plan.
Researchers will consult a variety of staff and students
The research must cover initiatives in all four countries of the UK and include consultation with nurses, nursing associates, midwives, nursing students, midwifery students and healthcare support workers.
The foundation is seeking applications from individuals or organisations to deliver the research project over a nine-month period.
The selected research team will receive funding up to the value of £30,000, and the study should be undertaken in 2020-21.
Providing an enduring legacy to the pandemic
‘We hope that this research into effective leadership strategies during the pandemic will provide an enduring legacy, highlighting some of the positive experiences to have emerged during the pandemic,’ said Ms Korea.
The closing date for applications is 5pm on 30 November 2020.
