Booklets aid midwives in diversity and equality issues

Royal College of Midwives’ seeks to nurture inclusive service with five new publications aimed at midwives and maternity support workers

Five booklets designed to help midwives deal with equality and diversity issues have been published by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

Intended for midwives, maternity support workers (MSWs) and workplace representatives, the publications explain the work of the union and guidance in five key areas. These are:

BME Midwives, Disciplinary Proceedings and the Workplace Race Equality Standard. This booklet covers the results of five years of freedom of information requests that the RCM made to London-based trusts.

Equality Essentials features the nine protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010, and the types of discrimination workers may encounter.

Working with the Menopause includes symptoms, age profiles of midwives, and the effects of menopause on staff in maternity units.

Pregnancy and Maternity Rights at Work applies to midwives who are pregnant, as well as those caring for women whose pregnancy results in them being discriminated against at work.

Work-related Stress which identifies stress triggers and gives heads of midwifery advice on positive management behaviours.

RCM employment relations adviser Amy Leversidge said of the publications: ‘We hope [the booklets] will provide valuable advice and support to midwives and MSWs throughout their working life.

‘Investment in NHS staff is an investment in NHS care.’
