The 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of Children is a framework for involving children in making decisions that affect them. Although not legally binding, all the nations involved recognise children as individuals with rights appropriate to age, development and competency (Article2). While a ‘right’ is a person’s entitlement as a member of society, along with rights comes responsibility. Article 5 respects the rights and duties of parents to direct and guide their children but also identifies the child’s right to think and believe what he or she wants with regards to religion (Article 14).
