Possibly the most significant challenges facing professionals today is the need to move from the ‘professional gift model’ as the basis underpinning the way we work with people who have a learning disability, to operating within a clear ‘citizenship model’. At the start of this series, while the citizenship model was a clear basis from which the authors were writing, its relevance as a driver for professional practice was not so clear. This has however increased significantly as a result of the potential inclusion of citizenship within the Green Paper for adult social care.
