About 300,000 patients a year contract a healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) in England, costing the NHS an estimated £1 billion a year, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) .

Each infection places a greater burden on NHS resources, can delay a patient’s recovery, adversely affect their quality of life and, in some cases, contribute to or cause death. Nursing students are at the forefront of patient care, and so can play a key role in infection prevention and control (IPC).
