Clear and accessible, this guide does exactly what it says on the cover. After providing a guided tour of the basics of research, the authors explain how to identify research problems and shape the question behind them.

Each chapter begins with a set of aims, offers activities for nursing and midwifery students to practise, and finishes with relevant learning points. The authors consider research design, sampling methods and ethics, before turning to the importance of research conduct and carrying out literature reviews.

The book’s only drawback is that it offers little information about meta-analysis, which is important in evidence-based subjects. The authors may argue that this topic is beyond the scope of their book, but more information would have been useful.

I recommend this book to nursing and midwifery students at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral level. As it covers literature reviews, it could also be useful to students embarking on health-related research.
