Nurses and nursing students honoured for their dedication and outstanding work

Up to £500 cash gifts given to nurse and nursing student recipients of this year’s RCN awards

Awards of up to £500 have been given to the nurse and nursing student recipients of the 2021 RCN Awards in recognition of their dedication and outstanding work to the profession.

The college announced the award winners, who each received £500, with those who were commended for their efforts receiving £250, following nomination by fellow RCN members.

Winners and nominees are ‘credit to nursing’

Former RCN president and outgoing chair of the RCN awards committee Anne Marie Rafferty said: ‘It was a pleasure to chair the awards committee and see the talent and expertise of outstanding RCN members and individuals who’ve made a significant contribution to our profession.

‘Congratulations to all the winners and nominees – you're a credit to nursing.’

Recipients of 2021 RCN Awards

  • Student Ambassador of the Year (winner) – Catherine McLaughlin
  • Student Ambassador of the Year (commendee) – Alisha Brown
  • Learning Representative of the Year (winner) – Sydney Masawi
  • Learning Representative of the Year (commendee) – Nyarai Makona
  • Safety Representative of the Year (winner) – Catherine Jones
  • Safety Representative of the Year (commendee) – Wendy Harrison
  • Steward of the Year (winner) – Hilary Nelson
  • Steward of the Year (commendee) – Anne Kennedy

Nursing fellows and honorary fellows also announced

In addition, the RCN also named this year’s fellows and honorary fellows who are now able to use the letters FRCN (Fellows of the RCN) after their names. The recipients were recognised for their commitment to advancing the science and practice of nursing and the improvement of health and patient care. Fellowships went to:

  • Catherine Casey.
  • Geraldine Cunningham.
  • Catherine Gamble.
  • Dinah Gould.
  • Julie Green.
  • Mark Hayter.
  • Mary Hinds.
  • Bridie Kent.
  • Raymond McMorrow.
  • Lyabode Oni.

Honorary fellowships went to Sandra Gracia and Helena Leino-Kilpi.

RCN Awards of Merit

Six members were recognised with the RCN Award of Merit, the highest honour for voluntary service to the RCN. They were:

  • Maggy Heaton.
  • Barbara Mortimer.
  • William Nichols.
  • Evaline Omondi.
  • Ged Swinton.
  • Gwendoline Vardigans.

Winners of the RCN Nursing Awards, formerly the RCNi Nurse Awards, which recognise outstanding achievements across the nursing community will be announced in the autumn.
