Tributes have been paid to a ‘truly inspirational’ nurse leader who has died from the blood cancer myeloma.

Lesley Eggleston was a nurse for more than 45 years, with her last role as a locality matron at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, where she had worked since 2015. She died on 23 June, aged 64.

Support, guidance and mentorship

Friends, family and colleagues have been sharing their memories of Ms Eggleston via a fundraising page set up to raise money for the charity Myeloma UK.

The JustGiving page was set up by Sussex area head of nursing and governance Nicki Leighton, who said her friend and colleague enriched the lives of many nursing professionals with her knowledge, talents and kindness.

‘For many, Lesley was more than just a nurse, she was a truly inspirational leader, providing support, guidance, mentorship and more importantly compassion and friendship in her own inimitable way,’ Ms Leighton said.

The trust’s chief nurse Donna Lamb said: ‘Lesley was the epitome of what it means to be a nurse. Patient care meant everything to her, and she was always striving to make things better for the people she cared for. She will be sorely missed by us all.’

The fundraising page has so far raised more than £1,750, surpassing its target of £1,000.
