Practice nurses will advise Olympics spectators preparing to go to Rio

See your practice nurse ahead of your Rio trip, Olympics fans urged

Sports supporters heading to the Rio Olympics in August are being urged to seek advice from their practice nurse or GP at least one month before travel.

Public Health England and the National Travel Health Network and Centre have published guidance ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics.

Travellers are advised to consult their practice nurse, GP or pharmacist four to six weeks before flying. Clinicians can advise on antimalarial medication and vaccinations, including for yellow fever, a potentially fatal tropical disease found in parts of Brazil.

Pregnant women are urged to postpone non-essential travel to Brazil because of the Zika virus, which is linked to brain malformation in newborns.

Nick Phin, deputy director of PHE’s national infections service, said: ‘Taking preventive measures to protect yourself and your family against possible health problems makes good sense.’
