Nursing is the most trusted profession in the UK for the fourth year in a row, the annual Ipsos MORI survey has revealed.

Of 1,020 British adults surveyed, 95% said they trusted nurses to tell the truth.

‘No surprise nurses top poll’

This is up by 2% from 2016, the first year nurses appeared on the list and were placed first.

Only 14% of respondents said they trusted politicians, the lowest ranking in this year’s list.

  • Nurses 95%
  • Doctors 93%
  • Dentists 90%
  • Teachers 89%
  • Engineers 86%

Responding to the survey’s results, RCN general secretary Donna Kinnair said: ‘As the profession that tops this poll once again, it’s no surprise that when a general election is called, politicians are keen to meet as many nurses as they can, in hospitals and in the community.

‘Trust is an essential part of a nurse’s relationship with patients, and nurses know not to take this privileged position lightly.'

‘Not crying wolf’

Professor Kinnair said trust in nurses is the reason members of the public have signed a petition calling for safe staffing levels to be enshrined in law in England.

The college is calling for greater investment in nursing education and to make the health and social care secretary accountable for providing safe and effective care.

‘The public realise when nurses say the NHS can’t afford to wait to fill in long-standing staff shortages, they’re not crying wolf,’ Professor Kinnair said.

The Ipsos MORI Veracity Index is the longest-running poll on trust in professions in Britain, and has been carried out annually since 1983.
