Nurses pick up new year honours from Prince William

Buckingham Palace investitures are recognition of nurses’ achievements

Leading nurses had a day with royalty when they collected honours from Prince William.

Independent health visitor and nurse entrepreneur Ruth Oshikanlu was made MBE in the new year honours for services to community nursing, children and families. 

For services to nursing

She was one of four nurses given honours by the Duke of Cambridge during an investiture at Buckingham Palace on Thursday last week.

Ms Oshikanlu, who is one of the judges of the RCNi Nurse Awards 2019, said: 'It was brilliant to be there alongside other nurses to celebrate the profession.

'I spoke to Prince William about the work we do with children and their families. Opportunities like these make what we do and the difference we make more visible. As nurses we need to shout about what we do and the impact we have helping people when they need it most.'

Campaigning work

Oxford Institute for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Research visiting professor of nursing Brian Dolan, a former editor of RCNi's Emergency Nurse journal, was made OBE for services to nursing and emergency care.

Professor Dolan's talk at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2016 inspired the campaign #EndPJParalysis, which aims to get patients moving, improving recovery and discharge rates.

Gail Powell, senior nurse and professional lead for health visiting at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, collected an MBE for services to health visiting.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust director of nursing Patricia Armstrong-Child was made MBE for services to nursing.
