Nurses’ hardship charity easily beats fundraising target
A charity that supports working and retired nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who are experiencing personal or financial hardship has smashed a £10,000 fundraising target.
A charity that supports nurses experiencing hardship has smashed a £10,000 fundraising target.
More than 80 people took part in Cavell Nurses’ Trust #10kForNurses campaign, which called on supporters to help raise £10,000 during October by running, walking, hiking or cycling 10km.
The campaign was launched amid a steep rise in calls to the trust's helpline.
Some £13,250 has been raised so far, with donations still coming in.
Future need
Fundraisers included James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust transformation nurse Joan Pons Laplana, who completed the Sheffield City10k challenge on 22 October on a space hopper.
He said: ‘You never know when you are going to need help in the future, so it’s really important that Cavell Nurses’ Trust has the funds to help nurses in crisis.'
Others got creative by baking 10,000 calories of cakes, sewing 10,000 stitches, or playing 10,000 seconds of tennis.
The Cavell Nurses’ Trust helps working and retired nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who are experiencing personal or financial hardship. Illness is the most common reason nursing professionals contact the trust. Others include disability, older age and domestic abuse.
Cries for help
In July, the trust revealed it had seen a 32% rise in calls in the first half of 2017, with 1,179 calls received compared with 891 in the same period in 2016.
Community fundraising manager Victoria Lewis said: ‘The campaign has been a success. We’re expecting more in soon, and with Gift Aid added on we hope to hit the £15,000 mark in a couple of weeks.
‘It’s incredible that so many people have got behind #10kForNurses in its first year, and with their combined dedication and efforts we can ensure that more vital support and help is available for UK nurses facing a crisis this winter.
‘We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has raised funds and donated.’
