Police in Devon collected medical equipment from South Hams Hospital, Kingsbridge, while responding last week to a collision near the hospital.

A nurse practitioner at the hospital offered to accompany them to the scene.

A statement on Devon and Cornwall Police’s Facebook page said: ‘We would like to send out our sincere thanks to the staff at South Hams Hospital, Kingsbridge.

‘Following the road traffic collision this afternoon at Sorley Cross, police attended the hospital to collect vital medical equipment, but the nurse offered to come with us and provide extra medical help at the scene.’

An ambulance later arrived and a patient was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Community

‘Once again, this shows what a fantastic community we live in and how the emergency services work together,’ the police added.

South Hams is managed by community interest group Livewell Southwest.

Chief executive Steve Waite said: ‘A nurse practitioner decided that she would support the police and attend the scene to ensure that the person in the car received an initial triage, and that care and support was initiated prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

‘Our colleague was able to provide a high standard of care and reassurance to the injured person before her transfer to the main emergency department in Plymouth.’
