A children’s nurse who as a child was cared for at a London hospital, and later went on to complete her nursing training there, has now had her wedding blessed at the hospital’s chapel.

Lucy was a patient at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour when she was three years old. She remained under the care of GOSH until she was 18.

Inspired by the care she received, she went on to train as a paediatric nurse. She completed her first clinical placement at the hospital and worked on the ward where she was treated as a child. Lucy is now qualified as a children’s nurse and works in London.

Blessing at chapel was ‘very special’

When she was planning her wedding to her partner Kevin, she decided she wanted to have a blessing at the hospital’s St Christopher’s Chapel before the ceremony in May.

Lucy said: ‘To share such an important place with Kevin on our wedding day was very special. I cannot remember a time when GOSH wasn’t in my life. I have never wanted to do anything but be a nurse, and to train at GOSH was a real privilege.’

Hospital’s chaplain ‘honoured’ to give the blessing

GOSH senior chaplain Dorothy Moore Brooks, who performed the blessing, said it had been a honour to accept Lucy’s request.

‘We know that GOSH makes a difference every day to its patients and their families,’ she said, ‘but it has been inspiring to hear how Lucy’s care at GOSH lit a spark to her becoming a nurse herself.

‘As chaplains, we feel honoured when we are invited to share in the highs and lows of people’s lives at GOSH. It is, therefore, wonderful for me to have been able to celebrate with Lucy and Kevin and pray for them in the beautiful setting of St Christopher’s Chapel.’
