Suspected tax avoidance schemes targeting nurses and other healthcare workers have been named by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

HMRC is urging nurses to withdraw from schemes that are run by Charteris Management Ltd (CML) with the promise of higher take-home pay.

Complex schemes often wrongly promise signatories can avoid paying NI or income tax

The complex schemes involve workers entering into two separate employment contracts – one with CML to provide services to its clients and another with a second party.

Earnings are then split between a small taxable salary and a much larger payment that CML claims is not taxable. Often these schemes wrongly promise that those signed up can avoid paying National Insurance or income tax.

Payments are often made in two parts – the first comes from CML and will likely be equal to or just above the national minimum wage.

The second, larger payment, usually comes from a third party and will often be labelled as a loan or something similar as a way to avoid paying tax.

HMRC urges nurses who might be involved in tax avoidance scheme to report it

HMRC warned that often those signed up to the schemes are hit with an unexpected tax bill and potential tax avoidance penalties as a result.

The HMRC’s director of counter-avoidance Mary Aiston urged nurses who think they might be involved in a scheme, or have been approached by a scheme promoter, to report it.

‘HMRC is determined to drive promoters of tax avoidance out of business. Naming the people behind tax avoidance schemes is a crucial step in helping customers stay clear of current and future schemes they promote,’ she said.
