Man to appear in court charged with murder of nurse

Tributes have been paid to nurse stabbed at mental health hospital

A man is due to appear in court today charged with the murder of a nurse at a mental health hospital.

Patrick Clarke, 68, was stabbed at Southleigh Community Hospital in South Croydon last Thursday (May 12).

Jimmy Jedson, 40, of South Croydon, will appear in custody at Bromley Magistrates’ Court after being charged with murder.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Clarke, who was described by his neighbour Richard Gould as a ‘real gentleman’.

He told the Press Association: ‘It is tragic. I knew him as a neighbour to say hello to and chat over the fence. He was a really nice, kind man. A very gentle man – a real gentleman.

‘He was retired, he would just stand in occasionally when they were short staffed.’

A spokesperson for Inmind, the private mental healthcare provider that runs the hospital, confirmed the victim was a nurse and added: ‘Our deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues. He was a valued and respected member of staff who will be deeply missed.'
