New model forms part of range celebrating women who have broken boundaries

A Florence Nightingale Barbie doll has been unveiled in the pioneering nurse’s bicentenary year.

The founder of modern nursing is one of the latest additions to the ‘inspiring women’ Barbie range, alongside renowned jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald and former world number one tennis player Billie Jean King.

Input of museum ensures authenticity

The Florence Nightingale Museum in London has worked with toy manufacturer Mattel on the project for the past two years.

The doll is holding the iconic lamp, the Turkish fanoos, and bears the Scutari Sash, which was worn by Miss Nightingale’s nurses at Scutari Hospital in the Crimean War and is regarded as the first official nurse uniform.

The museum’s assistant director Kristin Buhnemann said: ‘This is a fantastic way for us to engage audiences old and new. We are thrilled that Barbie has chosen to recognise Florence, as the museum celebrates her inspirational achievements and global legacy with a diverse array of activities and events.

‘Mattel’s commitment to detail and quality throughout the process has been admirable. Florence Nightingale would have applauded such a careful and considerate approach, as such attributes led to her own unrivalled success.’

Highlighting the work of pioneering women

The Barbie brand’s senior vice president and global head of dolls Lisa McKnight said the new figures shone a light on historical women who have broken boundaries.

‘By highlighting these women and their stories, we celebrate the impact they’ve made on history and encourage girls to chase their own dreams.’

The doll will be available from the Florence Nightingale Museum shop, as well as branches of John Lewis, Harrods and Selfridges. The price has been confirmed at £64.99.
