The Scraegg machine in action

A machine that makes scrambled eggs in 15 seconds is being trialled at a hospital in England, to provide a hot nutritious breakfast to patients.

The Scraegg device has been tested for the past two weeks on the Bramley and Carrel wards at Nottingham City Hospital.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) assistant head of facilities Chris Neale said previous feedback from the public had highlighted the desire for hot breakfasts and more choice.

‘This has always proved difficult in the past as we don’t have the infrastructure to be able to deliver a hot breakfast to patients safely, or to the quality that is acceptable,’ he added.

‘The Scraegg machine is portable and is taken around the wards during breakfast service. It produces fresh scrambled eggs in 15 seconds, which is served immediately to the patient.

‘Feedback has been positive, especially from patients who have been with us for a long period of time and welcome the additional hot choice.’

A spokesperson for the NUH Patient Partnership Group said: ‘This is great – it’s such a long time from supper to breakfast, and a hearty start will set patients up for the day and improve nutrition.’
