More than two million viewers a week tuned into the first series of BBC2 show Hospital, which was filmed across London’s Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and covered issues such as bed shortages and charging overseas patients for care.

Documentary makers Label1, in partnership with The Open University, gained unprecedented access to every single department, including surgery wards and maternity units.

Viewers saw the stark reality of surgeons having no work due to a shortage of beds, and nurses distressed at not being able to give patients the care they deserve.

More to see

Imperial director of communications Michelle Dixon said: ‘Hospital has given us the opportunity to show the amazing care and commitment of our staff, as well as the growing challenges we face as we respond to the changing needs and demands of our patients.

‘While the first series has provided a great insight into a whole range of issues and services, there is still much more to see.’

Open University head of nursing, Julie Messenger, who acted as a consultant to the filmmakers promised viewers would ‘have their eyes opened’ before series one was aired.
