The aim of this first article is to to increase nurses’ knowledge of casting, consider the health, safety and environmental aspects of casting, and outline the care required by the patient with a cast. In addition, information on access to the education required to be a safe casting practitioner is provided. After reading this article you should be able to:

Outline the main principles of casting.
Discuss the care the inpatient would require following application of a cast.
