Treating the child with minor scalp wounds

Elaine Eckersley A&E Staff Nurse, Sheffield Childrens’ Hospital

Elaine Eckersley describes the management of scalp wounds in children and an audit undertaken in her department at Sheffield Childrens’ Hospital

A child arrives in A&E holding a blood stained cloth to his head. He looks worried and upset. His mother states that he has cut his head. ‘Will it need stitches?,’ she asks. The child starts to cry and states plaintively: ‘I don’t want a needle.’
