Paracetamol

Anthony Summers Emergency nurse practitioner, University Hospital Lewisham, London

Following the article on intravenous paracetamol in last month’s issue, ANTHONY SUMMERS offers junior and senior emergency nurses a pharmacological overview of the drug

Paracetamol is prescribed regularly by emergency nurse practitioners (ENPs) and doctors for pain relief, and dispensed to patients by junior nurses. It is an effective analgesic for mild to moderate pain, such as headaches and joint pain, but can also be used as an antipyretic.
