Managing emergency admissions

John Sexton Senior Charge Nurse, A&E department, Royal United Hospital, Bath

John Sexton discusses a tool which enables the patient admissions team to take a proactive approach to managing emergency admissions

The nature of emergency departments is the unpredictability of the workload coming through the doors. Wouldn’t it be useful to have an idea of the number of people you are going to have to admit and a method of measuring the workload? To my knowledge there is no way of knowing this. However, you can predict the number of referrals for admission with some accuracy and measure your department’s workload using a simple tool.
