Book review: My Race for Life
Lecturer in cancer care Kay Townsend reviews this personal narrative
My Race for Life: On the path to recovery
£14.99 | 176pp
This is a personal narrative that describes the events of diagnosis, treatment and recovery, and illuminates the thoughts and feelings of the person at the heart of that story, Sue Shaw.
The journal style of writing is familiar and the book is a quick read but, as an insight for those caring for people with cancer, it tends to stick to first stages of reflection – what happened and the feelings evoked by events. As such it can only be seen as a companion piece to other literature about the subject.
If you are seeking a holiday read then this may be for you, but it is not a book that challenges your thinking about care or helps you to reassess what you do and how you do it.
