Six shortlisted nurses have all transformed the lives of patients and services users
Voting has opened to find the winner of our prestigious award for nurses whose care has had an enormous impact on patients' lives.
The public is invited to choose the winner of the Patient’s Choice category of the RCNi Nurse Awards, this year even more prestigious as it is the International Nurse of the Year and Midwife.
The award, sponsored by Nursing Standard, enables patients and families to thank a nurse, midwife, health visitor, healthcare assistant or assistant practitioner who has provided exceptional care. Voting is open to everyone.
Six inspirational nurses have been chosen from scores of nominations. The shortlist features:
- A nurse nominated by a group of young women with severe and enduring mental health problems and personality disorders in Derbyshire. They said she believes in them despite 'being difficult', is giving them hope for the future and is offering them support to get into college.
- A newly-qualified nurse from Warwick who stepped forward to help a man when he went into cardiac arrest during a long-haul flight. She ran the emergency situation until the aircraft landed.
- A nursing home manager and her team from Surrey who were nominated for the care of a man who had been given weeks to live, but who is now living ‘his second life’ by the coast.
- A community nurse who showed three people newly diagnosed with HIV that life is still worth living, despite the stigma they have experienced.
- A health visitor who is giving a community of mothers in Northern Ireland the strength and confidence to deal with the challenges they face.
- A nurse from the West Midlands who galvanised multiple agencies to rescue a young man with learning disabilities from neglect and get him to a place of safety. He is now living a happy life thanks to her determined intervention.
Gary Bell, editorial director of Nursing Standard publisher RCNi, was on panel of judges that drew up the shortlist.
He said: ‘The commitment and dedication of nurses during the pandemic has been publicly recognised, but these finalists demonstrate the diversity of modern nursing and the impact the profession has on the lives of people of all ages and from all walks of life and in a wide range of settings.
‘Nursing Standard is delighted to be showcasing the profession's reach and the difference it makes to individuals, families and entire communities in the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.’
