A Southampton NHS trust has become the first in the country to offer all patients the chance to access and manage their health records online.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) has extended the use of the My Medical Record (MyMR) website to patients, allowing them to access parts of their record from home.

See appointments and test results

The move allows staff to make available to patients information that is held in clinical and administrative systems, such as upcoming appointments, test results and consultant advice.

Patients can also use the website to keep daily health diaries, upload from devices used at home data such as blood pressure, blood sugar and activity levels, and communicate with nurses and doctors without attending hospital.

MyMR was first used at UHS in 2012 in a pilot involving patients with inflammatory bowel disease, before being extended to cover other services.

More control for patients

Trust director of informatics Adrian Byrne said: ‘MyMR is leading the way in working towards a virtual hospital environment that gives patients much more control over their healthcare and better accessibility to their clinical teams and health record.

‘We are extremely proud of the impact this development is having, not only in Southampton and the surrounding area but across the country, at a time when the digital agenda forms an integral part of the plan for the NHS over the next ten years.’
