A national survey has revealed increasing satisfaction with NHS cancer services in England, with most patients reporting easy access to their nurse specialist.

The National Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2017 asked respondents to rate their overall care on a scale of 0 (very poor) to 10 (very good).

Almost 70,000 people responded with an average rating of 8.80, up from 8.74 in 2016 and 8.70 in 2015.

There was also positive feedback for patient experience, being involved in decisions about care and having a named clinical nurse specialist.

Hard work

NHS England national cancer director Cally Palmer said: ‘The results of this survey are a testament to the hard work and dedication of NHS staff.

‘The latest statistics are clear – the number of people living beyond cancer is at a record high and we now know the vast majority of people with cancer also feel positive about the care they receive.’

Findings of the 2017 survey:

  • 91% of respondents said they were given the name of a clinical nurse specialist who would support them through their treatment – up 1% on 2016.
  • 86% of respondents said it had been ‘quite easy’ or ‘very easy’ to contact their cancer nurse specialist.
  • The 69,072 respondents gave an average rating of 8.80 – with 94% of patient giving a rating of 7 or higher.
  • 79% of respondents said they ‘were definitely involved as much as they wanted to be in decisions about their care’ – up 1% on 2016.
  • 89% of respondents said that, overall, they were always treated with dignity and respect while they were in hospital – up 88%.

The survey, commissioned by NHS England, has been collected since 2010, but only published since 2015.
