Charity funds have made it possible to recruit a mesothelioma clinical nurse specialist (CNS) for Wales

Sarah Morgan joins a 13-strong UK-wide team, funded by asbestos-related cancer charity Mesothelioma UK.

In her two-day-a-week role based at the Hywel Dda University Health Board in West Wales, Ms Morgan will work across the country to ensure access to specialist support and information, and to promote an appreciation of the UK-wide mesothelioma public health issue.

Commitment

She said: 'The opportunity to work as a mesothelioma CNS in Wales is a great privilege.

'As the only Mesothelioma UK nurse in Wales, I am committed to raising the profile of mesothelioma and will seek to influence the development of specialist services across Wales.

'I am looking forward to this new role and hope to contribute to the valuable work already being done by Mesothelioma UK.'

Active organising

Ms Morgan has been a nurse for more than 30 years, most recently as a Macmillan lung cancer specialist nurse at Hywel Dda, setting up the lung cancer specialist nurse service at the health board and winning an award for improved patient experience.

She has been active in the All Wales Lung Cancer forum, setting up regular educational meetings and organising the annual conference.

Ms Morgan is also a member of the National Lung Cancer Forum for Nurses and a founder member of the charity Lung Cancer Campaign, with aims to promote early diagnosis and improve services.
