Scrap the Cap: nurses urged to join day of action

The RCN wants nurses to share their stories on the effects of pay restraint as part of a digital day of action on 25 August

Nurses are being urged to lobby their local MP and share their stories of how the pay cap is affecting them as part of a digital day of action on Friday.

The RCN is staging the day of action as part of its scrap the cap campaign, which calls for the ongoing 1% cap on public sector pay to be removed.

In a bid to keep nursing pay on the political agenda, the college has asked members to explain why the pay cap should be lifted and how it is affecting them and their families, using an online form. It will share their stories on Friday.

The event comes ahead of the RCN's biggest ever rally, to be held in Parliament Square on 6 September in the fight for fair pay.

College president Cecilia Anim used her latest blog post to urge members to take part, asking them to tweet their MPs on why the pay cap must go.

Momentum

'This summer, thousands of you have been campaigning to scrap the cap on nursing pay,' she wrote. 'You’ve attended thousands of events, inside and outside workplaces, and at iconic locations including Downing Street and the Angel of the North.

'Our campaign has real momentum, but we must make sure we do not lose this energy as the nights draw in. This is why we're holding a digital day of action on 25 August.

'And when the day is over, our attention turns to September and our biggest ever scrap the cap rally.'

RCN members can register their interest and apply for funding to cover travel costs for the September rally here.
