Nurses topped the table ahead of pharmacists, doctors and police officers in the annual Gallup poll

The survey of 1,028 adults found 84% rated nurses’ honesty and ethical standards as ‘very high’ or ‘high’ while only 3% said they were ‘very low’ or ‘low’. The remaining 13% rated them as ‘average’.

Nurses have come out on top every year since the poll first included them in 1999. The only exception was in 2001, when firefighters scored 90% in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York.

'Proud'

‘Nurses are proud to have the public's trust and confidence’ said Massachusetts Nurses Association president Donna Kelly-Williams in response.

‘We are incredibly grateful for this distinction. It inspires nurses daily as they strive to provide safe and effective care.

‘Patients and their families count on nurses when they are at their moment of greatest vulnerability and need. The public sees how hard nurses work and how seriously they take their responsibility to advocate for safe and effective care.’

UK rating

The news comes as UK nurses were rated the most trustworthy profession – with a rating of 93% – in a similar poll published by Ipsos Mori earlier this month.

Politicians came bottom in both the US and UK poll.
