A second-year mental health nursing student has died of COVID-19.

Angella Naggayi, 42, was a single parent with two children, Annmarie, 12, and John, 8. The children paid tribute to her on a fundraising website.

Her son John said: ‘Mummy was a nice, caring person who loved me so much.’ Daughter Annmarie said: ‘In life, we love you dearly, in death we love you still, in our hearts you hold a place no one will ever fill.’

Originally from Uganda, Ms Naggayi was studying mental health nursing at Edinburgh Napier University.

Austyn Snowden, her personal development tutor, paid tribute to her character and work ethic, adding that she would be missed by the university community.

‘She really wanted to be a nurse’

‘Angella was diligent, hardworking and tried her best at all times,’ Professor Snowden said. ‘I found her to be polite and self-deprecating but with a great sense of humour, and while clearly juggling many different priorities, she really wanted to be a nurse.’

The fundraising page was set up to return Ms Naggayi’s body to Uganda for burial and to support her children.

She is believed to be the second nursing student to have died of COVID-19 in the UK. Ade Raymond, a first-year mental health nursing student at Middlesex University, died of COVID-19 in April 2020.
