Insufficient time and funding

The 2018 survey of 633 nurses and HCAs uncovered how care was being compromised:

  • Nearly two thirds of respondents (65%) said they did not have sufficient time to provide good care for dying patients.
  • More than nine out of ten (94%) had witnessed dying patients stuck in hospital because of delays to funding that would have allowed them to return to the community.
  • Just one in four (22.5%) felt confident about initiating conversations with patients about end of life care.

Marie Curie

Marie Curie is the UK’s leading charity providing care to people with any terminal illness in their own homes or in one of its nine hospices.

Supporting staff

The charity’s executive director of nursing, allied health professionals and quality, Julie Pearce, said past survey findings gave ‘tremendous insights and powerful reflections’ from UK nurses in different care settings, and she urged nurses and HCAs to have their say.

Ms Pearce added: ‘We only have one chance to get it right when supporting patients at the end of life.

‘Equally important is making sure that we support each other and have the support we need to maintain our well-being.

‘This year we’re interested in finding out how staff feel supported and what systems are in place to help them when they experience feelings of grief and emotional stress in their workplace.

‘Please take a few moments to complete our survey – your views and experiences do matter to us.’

Closing date and prize draw

The 2019 survey is open to all registered nurses and HCAs in the UK and closes at 9am on 28 April.

Everyone who completes the survey can opt to be entered into a prize draw to win one of 20 M&S vouchers worth £50 each.
