Tributes have been paid to the 'incredible' University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust chief nurse Philip Norman, who has died suddenly.

Philip Norman will be much missed, say colleagues.

Mr Norman, who died on Monday, had worked at the trust since 2013 and led improvements to care and services there.

He was credited with overseeing significant improvements in infection prevention and control, and helped redesign admission avoidance schemes. He promoted care closer to home and altered ward environments for the benefit of staff and patients.

'Philip touched all our hearts'

Trust chief executive Dame Julie Moore said: ‘Philip was not only an incredible nurse but an incredible person who touched the hearts of all those he met – patients, relatives and colleagues alike. He will be sorely missed by us all.’

Mr Norman qualified in 1988 and worked in various clinical areas including older adults, emergency, high dependency care and vascular surgery.

An experienced leader

After completing a master's degree in management and leadership, he joined Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where he held a number of senior nursing roles including acting chief nurse, assistant chief nurse, and operational deputy chief nurse. He was a governor of Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust.
