The Cavell Nurses’ Trust revealed that it received 56% more calls between January and March compared with the same period in 2016.

The trust provides support to UK-based nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants – working and retired – who are experiencing financial or personal hardship.

The charity has called on healthcare staff and the public to get involved in a fundraising week of action on 5-12 May.

The week was chosen to coincide with International Day of the Midwife on 5 May, and International Nurses’ Day on 12 May.

Community fundraising manager Victoria Lewis said: ‘We’re shocked to see such a sharp rise in calls for help from nursing professionals so far this year. We’re working hard to raise the funds we need to cope with this demand.

‘We’re urging everyone who cares about the UK’s nurses to help us, whether it’s through holding a cake sale at work, doing a sponsored run or tandem skydive, or simply making a life-changing donation.

‘There are ways for everyone to get involved and it all helps to support our fantastic nurses when they need it most.’
