A breast cancer nurse diagnosed with the disease will raise awareness by taking to the catwalk at a charity fashion show.

Clinical nurse specialist Mary Raphael was diagnosed in 2010 following a mammogram at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, where she worked.

After undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, Ms Raphael returned to her role at the hospital, where she treats patients who have secondary breast cancer.

She will join 21 other people living with the disease in the Breast Cancer Care Scotland fashion show in Glasgow on 22 September. The event aims to raise awareness about the support the charity offers to patients.

Better understanding

Ms Raphael said experiencing the physical and psychological effects of treatment after her diagnosis has helped her to understand patients better.

‘It has made me more likely to ask in-depth questions,’ she added.

‘Sometimes patients are reluctant to report side effects as they think it might affect whether their treatment will continue or not. However, if side effects are reported and managed appropriately it can improve quality of life.’
