International Council of Nurses reveals how it will promote the profession

A set of posters promoting the work of nurses will be part of a campaign to increase global awareness of the profession.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) launched the three posters for next year's International Nurses Day on 12 May – 2020 has been designated the Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organization. It is also the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Helping nurses worldwide to influence their governments

To mark the occasion, the ICN resources will publish resources to help nurses lobby their governments for investment, and to help the public understand what it is nurses do and why their work is important.

A report containing case studies, research and evidence for the work of nurses will be published early next year.

‘In the future, nurses will be seen for their unique contribution to the wellbeing of all the people of the world’

ICN chief executive Howard Catton said 2020 would be 'a catalyst to jump-start a new way of looking at nursing'.

'In the future, nurses will be seen for the unique contribution to the wellbeing of all the people of the world,' he said. 'We invite you to use all the resources available to help us promote the crucial work of nurses around the world.'

ICN president Annette Kennedy said: 'We encourage the public, governments and other health professionals to help us promote the work of nurses during the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.'
