Improving the patient’s experience of cancer-related fatigue

Paula Kuzbit Oncology Practice Development Nurse, Kent Oncology Centre, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, Maidstone Hospital, Kent

Fatigue is a complex, multifactorial disorder with physical, mental, and psychological dimensions that has been associated with diminished quality of life (QOL) in patients with cancer. It is one of the most commonly reported symptoms of cancer and its treatments; however, healthcare professionals often do not recognise it or fail to advise the patient on the best intervention strategies. This article attempts to help you understand the current thinking on what cancer-related fatigue is, identify assessment tools and discuss some of the interventions currently being investigated in nursing research
