Malignant melanoma is the sixth most common cancer in the UK and its incidence is rising, with large numbers of people living with the diagnosis. Although it is a major cause of skin cancer mortality, this cancer is usually curable if it is diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Prognosis for advanced disease, however, is poor, with median survival likely to be measured in months. Public education should focus on reducing the amount of transient, intense sun exposure, avoiding the use of sunbeds and raising public awareness of the signs and symptoms of primary melanoma. Nurses should have a good understanding of the disease so that they are better equipped to support and advise patients according to their need.
