Thought for food: nutritional assessment of chemotherapy patients

Karen Phillips Chemotherapy nurse specialist, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff

Cancer and its treatment can give rise to enduring nutritional problems for patients, presenting challenges to nurses and other health professionals. Patients who are malnourished are likely to suffer poorer outcomes, and preventing malnutrition is easier than reversing it. This article considers the merits of different methods of nutritional assessment and the roles nurses and others can play in undertaking such assessments. In arguing for greater appreciation of the importance of nutrition in cancer nursing, the author concludes that attitudes and biases that diminish the effectiveness of proper screening must be overcome if nutrition care is not to be devalued.
